🎨 MINI PAINTING BRAIN RETRAIN – The Monkey King – Fairytale Games

ON THE WORKBENCH

The next project is another figure from the same box set as the Cheshire Cat I just completed. This is The Monkey King.

In looking around for inspiration for his color scheme I came across these two helpful references…

So here is where I am starting… I just don’t have the dexterity to clean the mold release lines or pin the weapon straight like I would like but if I want to ever get anything painted I will have to just get over that…

🎨 MINI PAINTING BRAIN RETRAIN – STAGE 3 STARTED

This is going to be harder than I thought. My hand tremors make fine detail work and smooth blending just not possible. So I needed to figure out a way to still show detail without relying on being able to tightly control a brush… Imagine this whole figure is not much bigger than a quarter so the detail is Itty bitty… And much of my other ones are even smaller…. But anywhoooooo….

I am trying a technique that you can see the best on the tree trunk. I created very strong, dramatic highlights in a cartoon style and will go back once it’s ready and add some light color back over the top to add tone back in… Not at all my normal style but it might work…

🎨 MINI PAINTING BRAIN RETRAIN – STAGE 1

STAGE 1 – basic color blocking – is done… the idea of Stage 1 is like kindergarten coloring – stay in the lines and put down a basic middle tone color in the right spots but just in 3D…

Things I have learned so far :
▪️ Pushing myself for an hour straight out of the gate because… Just 5 more min…. Maybe not the best idea…
▪️ 2yr old paint requires much, much, much shaking – whew!
▪️ My old lady eyes, even wearing my detail glasses, are certainly not what they used to be…
▪️ My hands are wrecked for high detail work… I will have to do short sessions because the shakes are real and I think, I hope, I have an idea that will compensate somewhat for it… We shall see…

That needs to dry completely now and I’ll start Stage 2 tomorrow…

WELLNESS CHECK
Not good –  but I knew that… I have been feeling crummy for a long time and here is the black and white of it.   The meds only work for so long before we have to increase them… I was down to the 150s / high 90s but it’s right back where it was.

Eating more meals today was…. Interesting… 😂

At the beginning of the day I thought there is no way I’m going to be able to eat all this today and I felt like I was just kind of constantly making something and then cleaning it up and then making something and then cleaning it up… 😂…

Now I don’t have a whole lot going on so it was fine but I was surprised that by about my 8.00 meal – I was actually a little hungry, which for me is unusual.   Feed the metabolism…

I made it through Day 1 with everything that I had pre tracked and hit all of my targets which is fantastic.   I did take a look at what my heart rate was after eating so I had a baseline to go from and it was pretty much what I thought it was – in the low 130s.   Now keep in mind this is just sitting at the table doing nothing.  

I had a lot of very simple things – the only thing that I even used to cook today was the air fryer twice and then the microwave for the shrimp and zucchini.   Everything else was just as is…. Easy peasy…

So how do I feel at the end of Day 1?

Medical stuff aside –  I think this is certainly doable with some planning.   I am looking forward to getting my BP and HR down so I can see what effect this has when I’m not in a bad reaction state. The only thing I am going to change is I am going to try 5 instead of 6 meals tomorrow… It was a bit of a hard press today.

I also need to change my volume eating habit (eat more lower calorie foods) – so I am going to balance smaller volume, higher calorie items so I’m not eating so much to fill my metrics. Definite change…

BRAIN RETRAIN

For many years, until my hands got weak and I started getting tremors, I painted fantasy miniatures… Think Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter type things. I absolutely loved it but I eventually reached a point where I was so disappointed with my limitations I gave it up…

I haven’t been in my painting room in over 2 yrs… It was making me anxious and sad and I didn’t deal well with all the feels – so I closed the room off and at one point almost sold it all… and this is a very addictive hobby – I have hundreds of miniatures to be painted…

My hands are still not great but I miss this so much that I am going to try to reteach myself to paint within my current limitations. I will have to learn all new techniques as the way I painted before is just not possible anymore.

So I dug around for a model that didn’t have too much tiny tiny detail that I couldn’t handle and found this Cheshire Cat from a box set of Fairytale Creatures.

Then while looking for a reference photo to use I found this teapot…. WHAT!?!

It’s exactly the color palette I was thinking of – I didn’t paint that, I found it on Google….

So the models range in size and difficulty and this one is bigger than many I have but until I develop new brush skills, that’s what I need.

2yrs guys… 2yrs of missing a hobby I was more than a little involved in. I have to keep reminding myself to go in with low expectations and that I may just have to settle for a very different style than what I could do before but…

A NEW GAME PLAN

I have not felt well for months now and I have fallen back into a bad habit of eating only one meal a day sometimes and trying to cram all my nutrition goals into that one meal.

And while there are many people who do OMAD (one meal a day) intentionally – I have noticed that larger meals are triggering more heart rate and blood pressure issues for me. Basically your body has to work harder to digest more food and foods of certain types, and in my case, it has to deal with added sensitivities and intolerances as well and I’m just struggling to cope.

So I am going to try an experiment – it may be a few days or a few months, it really just depends on what happens. I am going to go back to a more grazing style of eating – staying within the same calorie and macro goals but breaking it down into 5-6 sittings instead of 1 or 2.

The nerd in me loved the “Hobbit Diet” but it does take far more planning and balancing to stay within macros and most people don’t have the time or ability to eat like that… Since I do, why not try it right? What I’m currently doing is very much not working…

(For reference my resting heart rate is 65-75 but just sitting at the table, within 10min or so of starting to eat it is 120ish and remains near there for several hours if it is a large meal)

The problem with this is my Insulin Resistance… Every time you introduce a new meal or snack, you trigger insulin production. This could make my numbers worse but I’m hoping that by keeping my carbs at the same 35% and adjusting some of my meds, I can keep it under control… We’ll see…

Something has to let up… Maybe between this and a modification to my meds I’ll find some relief. I have pre-planned the day – now let’s just see if I can accomplish it…

DAILY MEAL HIGHLIGHTS
🌞 Good morning 🌞 gentle friends!
Let’s get this day started…

POLISH DILL PICKLE SOUP
This is one of the soups I meant to make earlier as my filler soup. Dividing it up into 6 servings (will measure once it is cooled and I add the yogurt) makes it 52 calories per serve.

▪️ Chicken Stock
▪️ Dill Pickle Juice
▪️ Dill Pickles

▪️ Kale

▪️ Turnip
▪️ Garlic / Ginger
▪️ Greek Yogurt

I substituted turnip for the potato,  added zucchini and kale and am using Greek Yogurt in place of the sour cream…

▪️Put everything except corn starch and yogurt in Instant Pot. 
▪️High Pressure 3 min and Quick Release.
▪️Make cornstarch slurry and add to hot soup.   Mix well.
▪️Let cool and stir in yogurt to avoid it breaking or just add yogurt when serving (which is what I do)

NO KNEAD SEEDY ARTISAN BREAD
I am no baker but this bread is one of my favorites. If you like a seedy, chewy, sourdough / caraway style bread – this is fantastic.

Makes 1 loaf – this weighed 842g cooked and I get about 16 slices from it at 72 cal / slice so about like a Dave’s Killer Bread slice…

2 cups self rising flour – if using all purpose flour – add 2tsp (8g) baking powder per cup of flour

2tbsp caraway seeds
2tbsp cumin seeds
2tbsp minced onion
2tbsp Italian Seasoning
1tbsp granulated garlic (or garlic powder)
Season as you like – use different seeds or no seeds – add 1tbsp sugar or honey for a sweeter bread or experiment with adding applesauce or pumpkin to adjust the flavor. It will change the density so you will have to play with it if you want to try those.

1½ cups water
¾ cup Greek Yogurt

▪️Mix dry ingredients.
▪️Mix water and yogurt to basically a milk consistency.
▪️Combine wet and dry ingredients and mix into a shaggy dough.
▪️No kneading, no rolling it out – just combine.
▪️Pour into well greased loaf tin.
▪️Cover lightly and let proof in a warm place for 45-60min.
▪️Bake at 425° for 20min.
▪️Let cool and cut into slices or cut as you go.

This is fantastic toasted – it has all the nooks and crannies like an English Muffin!

Freezes well.

Cooked in @mychefiq 6Q Smart Cooker
Trim artichoke stem (and petal tips if needed). Cut off the top inch or so of the artichoke and rinse to remove any dirt between the petals.

Place Artichoke on trivet or in steamer basket face up, squeeze juice of 1 lemon into the crevices (*optional), add lemon halves to pot with 1 cup water.

Cook 20min on High Pressure + Natural Release
